Ford Yields Smarter Tech for Businesses by Passing On Built-In WiFi

February 8th, 2016

f-150_every-other-truck-is-historyYou’ve probably seen the Chevy “mobile office” commercial where a receptionist and old school office equipment is installed in the back of a F-150. When you’re Ford Tough and top dog, lots of folks like to nip at your heels.

But there’s a reason Ford chose to equip its commercial vehicles with cutting edge technology like Sync3 and Ford Telematics, but did not include integrated WiFi operated through something like OnStar: after-purchase cost to consumer and lack of demand in market research.

In today’s mobile environment where 4G LTE gives stronger signal coverage and mobile vendors are moving to all-data plans, expecting businesses to pay OnStar rates didn’t make sense compared to alternate options such as commercial plan hotspot technology. Ford did market research and decided – for now – against it.

In an article in Paste Magazine, writer Tyler Hayes gives reasons why rolling WiFi isn’t entirely practical just yet.

The 4G LTE connection provided by OnStar isn’t cheap—it’s probably the same price, if not more expensive, compared to adding on extra data to your existing phone’s plan. Current (non-OnStar subscriber) rates on the website are listed at $20 a month for 1 GB of data and $200 a year for 10 GB of data.

Keep in mind that the standard definition version of a movie like Big Hero 6 on iTunes is listed at 1.54 GB in size. If you wanted to buy and download that movie you’d spend the price of the movie plus more than $20 on your car’s Wi-Fi data costs for that month. Beyond the price, I ran into many times when OnStar’s Internet service wasn’t very fast…streaming songs form my Bluetooth paired phone often resulted in songs cutting out as they buffered.

Tell us what you think about the need – or lack thereof – for integrated WiFi in Ford’s Commercial Lineup.

Ford & DJI Team Up To Explore Drone Use with Ford SYNC®

January 6th, 2016

Ford-DJI_DroneBorgman Ford Commercial’s primary goal is to provide you with the tools you need to best serve your customers. With the new year, Ford is looking ahead at what that could mean in the future.

Ford recently announced that they have partnered with DJI for the 2016 DJI Developer Challenge. Contestants are tasked with developing a drone that would communicate with a Ford F-150 in real time and land in the pick up bed.

Ford and DJI are doing this to help the UN locate survivors after a natural disaster, but the project also has huge potential for businesses. A Ford Vehicle and a drone working as a team could be used for construction, inspections, agriculture, forestry, surveying, and many other tough jobs.

In this latest article published on the Ford Media Center, Ford details their involvement with the DJI Developer Challenge and explores how this technology can save lives and make the world more efficient.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Ford and DJI are imagining a world in which vehicles and drones become more capable and efficient working together, and are announcing a challenge to develop the software to make that possible.

Working with DJI, the world leader in professional-grade drone systems and software, Ford invites innovators to participate in the DJI Developer Challenge to create drone-to-vehicle communications using Ford SYNC®AppLink or OpenXC. The goal is a surveying system for the United Nations Development Program to inspect emergency zones inaccessible to even the most versatile vehicles.

The technology could allow United Nations first responders to earthquakes or tsunamis to quickly deploy drones able to survey and map hardest-hit areas – all from the cab of an F-150.

“At Ford, we are driving innovation in every part of our business to help make people’s lives better,” said Ken Washington, Ford vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering. “Working with DJI and the United Nations, there is an opportunity to make a big difference with vehicles and drones working together for a common good.”

Though this challenge has a specific mission, the software eventually could allow drone-to-vehicle applications in agriculture, forestry, construction, bridge inspection, search and rescue, and many other work environments in which vehicles are space-, height- or terrain-limited.

2017 Ford Super Duty Upfits Tested Tough

December 1st, 2015

17SuperDutyTestingBorgman Ford Commercial has been keeping a keen eye on the upcoming 2017 Ford Super Duty, and as more is revealed, the more impressed we become. When the New Super Duty finally arrives in late 2016, it’s sure to be one of the smartest and toughest additions to any fleet.

In this latest article published on the Ford Media Center, Ford engineers were tasked with testing the New Super Duty’s ability to accept aftermarket upfits, and thanks to innovative features like the new fully-boxed frame, it still proves Ford Tough even when overloaded.

Here are some excerpts from the article:

From virtual torture testing in supercomputers to purpose-built potholes, Ford has tough tested the all-new Super Duty – the toughest, smartest, most capable Super Duty ever – to make sure it’s ready for popular aftermarket cargo box equipment that ranges from glass racks to salt spreaders.

17SuperDutySaltSpreaderFor the first time, the Super Duty body uses high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy, which is more dent- and ding-resistant than the outgoing steel cargo box and not subject to red rust corrosion. The backbone of Super Duty is an all-new, fully boxed frame composed of more than 95 percent high-strength steel that is up to 24 times stiffer than the previous frame.

“Ford Super Duty customers depend on their trucks to work hard every day across a variety of jobs,” said Kirk Leonard, vehicle integration engineer for Ford. “We drove prototype vehicles over the durability roads of the Ford Proving Grounds fitted with common aftermarket accessories to test the fitment and capability of our toughest pickup box ever.“

Throughout the evaluations on extreme durability roads and off-road terrain, and even after overloading select equipment, the new box design stood up to the abuse, run after run. Upon completing the challenge, the vehicles were examined in the lab by the team. No concerns were found in either the supporting structure or the mounting surfaces.

You can read the rest of this article on The Ford Media Center, or click the video thumbnail above to see footage of the Super Duty running through the Ford Proving Grounds test track.

Borgman Ford Commercial not only delivers on providing you the hardest working trucks around. Because we work closely with local upfit companies, we can easily tailor any vehicle to any job. To see our full commercial lineup, Click Here.

Deduct Up To $200K With Section 179

November 10th, 2015

Sundw_use_V2Expand Your Ford Fleet and Save On Taxes!

It’s that time of year again! As businesses start to get ready for tax season, some are finding that they still have some wiggle room left in their deductions, and they come to Borgman to expand their fleet. Don’t leave any money on the table, stop in to see what we can do for you! Read on for a quick overview of Section 179.

What Is Section 179?

Section 179 is a part of the IRS tax code that allows businesses to deduct equipment purchases from throughout the tax year. Simply put, if you buy or lease a commercial vehicle from Borgman, you can deduct the full purchase price from your business’s gross income.

How Does It Work?

Normally, businesses get to write off equipment purchases such as vehicles a little bit at a time. While this is better than nothing, it doesn’t really incentivize growing your business. Section 179 allows you to write off the entire purchase price of equipment purchased throughout the year, allowing you to make more effective investments in your fleet.

Who and What Qualifies For Section 179?

Typically, any business that buys equipment can qualify for Section 179, but there are limitations. For 2015, businesses can write off up to $200,000 in equipment purchases, up to $25,000 per item. Vehicles purchased or financed must be placed into service during the tax year. Most commercial vehicles qualify, but there are some limitations on passenger vehicles. Be sure to check with us or view the latest guidelines on IRS.gov for more information.

Stop by our showroom soon to see our lineup of Ford Commercial vehicles, and to find out how you can stretch your dollar even further for the end of the year. Click Here to see our full Ford Commercial Inventory.

Call Sundew Prindle today at (616) 249-8877 for more information about Section 179 Deductions.
